Google versus Yahoo

Don't let anyone tell you that cometition is good for the consumer.

Case in point: Google and Yahoo. These two are battling to be king of web-based email. Google Mail (Gmail) turned one year old today. It made big news when it announced it would give 1GB of email space for free on April 1st, 2004. It was no April Fool's Day joke. Yahoo responded by increasing it's email space limit which eventually stopped at 250MB. That is all about to change. Yahoo announced that it will upgrade it's service and quadruple it's free space to 1GB. It's a no-lose situation for consumers like me who have email accounts with both providers. Not to be outdone, Google made a big birthday announcement: it has doubled email capacity to 2GB for all it's users. Boom! Both have made other improvements and are in a tight race to get and keep customers. I use Yahoo more than Gmail but I'm slowly converting over. 2GB is a sick amount of space!

Here is an article about it from the New York Times. If you want to read it, do it soon cuz the NYT only let you read their articles for free for a short amount of time.

Hotmail still sucks and Excite Mail is even worse. Never mind MSN. I have never used AOL so I can't really say anything about it. Hotmail is far behind the pack and is just now announcing that it will offer 250MB soon. Weak. If any of you are still using these companies and want an upgrade to Gmail, let me know. I have lots and lots of invitations.
Comments:
Who needs to 2GB of email space? Besides the President who probably gets billons of hate emails.
